On Friday, as the coronavirus crisis continued to intensify, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a press conference in Brussels at which she announced her administration is setting up a €37bn fund designed to ease the impact of the disease. She criticized moves by member states, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia and Hungary, to effectively close their borders.
Clearly, coronavirus cases are on the rise in the EU. We have been speaking to citizens.
EU home affairs ministers have been meeting in Brussels to discuss the crisis. They are looking at ways to introduce health screening at borders but the EU Commission representative at the meeting warned members of the bloc to agree on any actions prior to implementation.
One senior economist working here at the European Commission suggested to me, this is the perfect storm for the EU. He pointed out the eurozone economy was already waning, the worst and most dangerous president possible is currently in the White House, Brexit happened, and to top it all off; coronavirus.
